"The Letter He Never Wrote". A 3-Part Reflection for Fathers & Men Who Are Still Healing
✦ REFLECTION CHALLENGE ✦
Set aside 20–30 minutes this week. Find a quiet space. Have a journal or paper ready. This one is not easy — but it is necessary.
Part 1: The Letter from Your Father (5–10 minutes)
Write a letter from your father to you — the one you needed, whether he gave it or not. Write the words you wish he had said. The things you needed him to name in you. The advice you wish had been spoken over your life. Let yourself feel whatever comes up as you write it. Don't rush past it. This is not about what he actually said — it is about what you needed.
Part 2: What You Are Now Passing On (5 minutes)
Look at your list of what you needed. For each one, ask honestly: am I giving this to the young people in my life? Circle the ones you are. Underline the ones you're still working on. This is not a guilt exercise — it is a clarity exercise.
Part 3: Your Own Letter Forward (10 minutes)
Now write a letter from yourself to your child — biological or chosen. Write the things you want them to know, that you are committed to saying and showing, not just assuming they know. Keep it. Read it again in six months. Let it be your standard.
Share what you're working on, not what you've perfected. Tag @nos4dads and use #WhatIWishILearned to join the conversation. We heal in community.
